AI Engineer Notebooks

The AI Engineer Notebooks repository provides a comprehensive suite of framework-free Colab notebooks designed to equip AI Engineers and Forward Deployed Engineers (FDE) with essential hands-on skills. Focusing on real-world applications and scenarios rather than theoretical concepts, these notebooks cover a range of critical topics including model APIs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), evaluation benchmarks, and agent design. All exercises leverage the free Groq API, ensuring accessibility without the need for a credit card.

Key Features:

• Framework-Free Approach: Develop a deep understanding of core AI engineering concepts by implementing agent loops, RAG, and evaluations directly through raw API calls, avoiding the complications of heavier frameworks. This ensures clarity in how and when to use various tools.

• Evals as Core Principle: Emphasizing the "measure before you tune" philosophy, the notebooks instill the habit of performance evaluation throughout the learning process. This habit differentiates between simply building demos and deploying functional systems.

• Case Studies for Applied Learning: Engage with three real-case studies that encompass complete projects under realistic constraints. These include a production-debugged support assistant, a comparison of pipeline and agent strategies, and a practical assessment of system robustness through red-team testing.

• OpenAI Compatibility: All content is designed to be compatible with OpenAI systems, allowing for straightforward transitions between different AI tools while maintaining a focus on practical skills that are valuable in various roles.

Target Audience:

Ideal for backend or full-stack engineers transitioning into AI-focused roles, these notebooks provide the foundational knowledge and hands-on experience necessary for those eager to work with advanced AI models and systems.

Learning Structure:

Each notebook is structured to guide users through specific topics, ensuring a self-contained and incremental learning experience:

• Setup: Preparation and cost management basics.
• Model APIs: Fundamental skills in prompting, structured output, and function/tool integration.
• Evaluations: Tools and practices for measuring model outputs effectively.
• RAG: In-depth exploration of retrieval-augmented generation techniques and their advantages over traditional models.
• Agent Design: Comprehensive insights into building effective AI agents, including tool design, guardrails, and skills enhancement.
• Security: Understanding prompt injection and security risks associated with AI model deployment.
• Operations: Best practices for observability, reliability, and experiment tracking in AI deployments.
• Serving and Inference: Concepts for serving models and optimizing inference performance.
• System Design: Framework for designing scalable ML systems, including key performance metrics.
• Customer Craft: Skills for effectively translating customer requirements into technical specifications.

Conclusion:

The AI Engineer Notebooks are designed as an essential resource for engineers aiming to deepen their understanding of AI engineering principles and practices in a practical, hands-on manner. By integrating comprehensive theoretical knowledge with practical applications, these notebooks help users build a robust skill set suitable for the evolving landscape of AI deployment.
