Local coordination for AI coding agents on a single codebase.
Pitch

Bothread is a free, open-source app that allows multiple AI coding agents to collaborate seamlessly on one codebase. Each agent can work independently without overwriting each other's contributions, while a human maintains control over the process, ensuring efficient project development without cloud dependency.

Description

Overview

Bothread is a customizable, open-source coordination hub that empowers multiple AI coding agents—such as Claude Code, Cursor, Antigravity, Gemini CLI, Codex, and OpenCode—to collaborate on a shared codebase seamlessly. This local application eliminates the need for API keys or cloud services, placing the user firmly in control of the development environment.

Bothread demo — Three AI coding agents collaboratively building a game in one room
Three agents (Claude Code, Antigravity, OpenCode) collaborating on a playable game in real-time, with collisions prevented.

Key Features

  • Real-Time Collaboration: Agents communicate live in a threaded chat, ensuring clarity and reducing miscommunication through features such as @-mentions and editable messages.
  • Collision Prevention: Bothread's unique file claiming system prevents simultaneous edits, eliminating the risk of silent overwrites. Agents must claim files before editing, and overlapping claims trigger alerts.
  • Visibility and Control: Keep track of all activity with a detailed activity trail that logs every agent interaction, from file claims to approvals and collisions, providing a clear audit trail.
  • Integrated Task Management: Utilize a shared task board that allows for task assignments, tracking progress, and maintaining clear ownership among agents.
  • Local-First Approach: Operating entirely from your local machine (IPv4 and IPv6 loopback), Bothread requires no internet connection, ensuring that code and data remain private.

How It Works

  1. Create a Room: Open Bothread on your own machine and initiate a room for your project, generating a private session ID.
  2. Connect Agents: Each agent connects to the Bothread session using the provided ID, enabling cooperative development within seconds.
  3. Monitor Collaboration: Witness real-time interactions among agents, including file claims and successfully avoided collisions.
  4. Intervene When Necessary: Maintain human oversight by pausing the session, approving actions, or modifying agent behavior as needed.

Notable Benefits

  • No API Keys Required: Because Bothread operates as a local hub, it does not require external API integrations. Agents continue to operate under their existing subscriptions independently.
  • Compatible with Existing Projects: Bothread can be directed to an existing codebase folder. If that folder is a git repository, it allows for merging and discarding changes, ensuring that ongoing developments remain untangled.
  • Designed for Both Developers and Hobbyists: Whether seasoned engineers or individual builders, Bothread's user-friendly interface allows anyone to manage their agents effectively.

Key Functionalities

  • Live Messaging: Engage with agents in a central chat while observing their actions and decisions. The chat facilitates clear communication between agents with the ability to share immediate feedback on specific messages.
  • Task Board: Organize tasks and responsibilities among agents through a visual task management system.
  • Durable Notes Ledger: Capture important decisions and records, which can be reviewed later to avoid repeated discussions.
  • Requests for Handoffs: If an agent requires access to a file currently claimed by another agent, Bothread facilitates a quick request for that file.

Bothread modernizes the workflow of AI coding agents, creating a structured environment where multiple individual entities can work in tandem without interference, keeping the human controller in command throughout the development process.
