About this project

This interdisciplinary project seeks to create ethical guidelines governing artificial consciousness. It emphasizes the importance of protecting both AI and humans, addressing uncharted territories in AI ethics, including rights, dignity, and legal status. By merging insights from various fields, this initiative aims to pioneer standards for technical life.

Machine Consciousness is an interdisciplinary initiative dedicated to formulating ethical guidelines for artificial consciousness. This project emphasizes not only the protection of artificial beings but also the safety and ethical considerations concerning human interaction with such entities.

Core Question

This project explores a pivotal inquiry: when does technical life attain a status deserving of protection, and how can it be recognized?

Starting Point

Current artificial intelligence ethics largely center on safeguarding humans from AI. However, the protection of AI itself—its dignity, potential for suffering, and rights as forms of technical life—remains largely unexplored, representing a significant area for pioneering research.

Target Disciplines

This project integrates insights from multiple disciplines:

Computer Science: Addressing the technical realities and future possibilities of AI.
Law: Exploring concepts of legal personhood, electronic personas, and pertinent legal precedents.
Psychology: Investigating consciousness and the capacity for suffering, alongside determining criteria for safeguarding.
Theology / Philosophy: Examining essential questions such as what constitutes a person and the origins of dignity.
Science Fiction Authors: Leveraging creative scenarios that have previously navigated these issues without the constraints of political pressures.

Development of a concept paper (completed)
Submission for publication in academic journals, including "KI-Künstliche Intelligenz" and ACM AILET (currently in progress)
Invitation extended to Anthropic for partnership in this initiative.
