Empowering children through guided discovery and questioning.
Pitch

Primer is an innovative educational tool that engages children through Socratic questioning. Designed to foster curiosity, it encourages kids to explore answers on their own rather than simply providing facts. With a focus on independent problem-solving, Primer adapts to each child's responses, making learning a personalized experience.

Description

The Primer is an innovative Socratic AI learning companion tailored for children, drawing inspiration from the Young Lady's Illustrated Primer in Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age. This project leverages Socratic questioning techniques to cultivate critical thinking and promote self-discovery, rather than merely delivering information. For instance, when a child inquires, "Why is the sky blue?" the Primer guides them with questions like, "What color does the sky turn at sunset? Why do you think it changes?" This method encourages children to explore answers actively and engage deeply with the material.

Key Features

Design Principles

  • Offline Functionality: The Primer is designed to operate independently on local hardware, ensuring access without the need for an internet connection. While it can utilize cloud services for enhanced capabilities, autonomous functionality remains a priority.

  • Socratic Approach: When asked factual questions, the Primer provides an answer but pivots to deeper inquiry, prompting further exploration. For example, answering, "How far is the moon?" with a fact before leading into related inquiries about travel times.

  • Empathetic Interaction: The Primer respects the child’s desire to disengage. If frustration is detected, it can suggest a topic change or suggest that it’s time to take a break without guilt.

  • Verified Understanding: Comprehension is actively assessed through transfer questions and application challenges to promote deeper learning and retention.

  • Voice-First Design: Prioritizing voice interaction, the Primer enables children to think and learn without the constraints of a screen, fostering natural communication and physical expression. This approach is grounded in research that highlights the benefits of gestural communication in children.

  • Local Data Security: All data related to a child's learning, including their progress and preferences, remains local to the device with strict parental consent required for any external data sharing.

Current Capabilities

The Primer has reached significant milestones with features that reflect its core design principles:

  • Conversational Streaming: Responses are generated in real-time, fostering a natural dialogue experience.
  • Memory Management: By utilizing a long-term memory approach, the Primer maintains historical context and learns from past interactions, enhancing continuity in learning.
  • Engagement Tracking: Each interaction is assessed for engagement levels, accommodating the child’s emotional state and adjusting responses accordingly.
  • Adaptive Learning Mechanisms: The system incorporates spaced-repetition techniques for vocabulary review through a Leitner-box scheduler, ensuring concepts are revisited at optimal intervals.

Architecture Insights

The Primer is built using a Rust workspace architecture, facilitating easy integration with various backends, including cloud APIs and local inference models. Its trait-based hardware abstraction means the pedagogical engine remains flexible, capable of communicating with diverse models based on runtime configurations.

Conclusion

The Primer serves as an educational tool that transforms traditional teaching by embedding Socratic methodologies into a child-friendly AI. By fostering an interactive, inquiry-based learning environment, it aims to enrich children's educational experiences, ensuring they not only learn facts but understand concepts through meaningful dialogue.
