Description

Overview

The Volkov Commander repository serves as a historical archive, preserving original artifacts and source snapshots related to the development of the Volkov Commander utility. The project documents the evolution of the software and aims to provide reliable material for research, reference, and preservation.

Historical Context

Volkov Commander was originally developed by Vsevolod Volkov as a compact and efficient file manager for DOS systems. What began as a lightweight and experimental idea evolved into a widely used utility valued for its performance and minimal resource consumption, especially on PC/XT-class hardware.

The historical background presented in this repository is based in part on later correspondence in which Vsevolod Volkov shared insights into the origins and development of the software. This context is included to complement the archived materials and does not imply direct involvement in the original development.

Over time, Volkov Commander gained popularity among users, who ultimately established its name and reputation within the DOS software ecosystem.

Repository Structure

This repository is organized to preserve and present different historical versions of the software:

  • The archives/ directory contains original ZIP files, retained to preserve authenticity and provenance.
    • archives/vc005.zip: Early binary-only/reference distribution
  • The versions/4.05/ directory contains the extracted source tree from vc405.zip
  • The versions/4.99.09/ directory contains content derived from vc49909.zip

Snapshot commits and tags are aligned with the most recent timestamps found within each source archive. While original file timestamps are preserved inside the ZIP files, they are not fully retained in the Git working tree.

Notes

This repository is intended for archival and educational purposes. It provides insight into the historical development of Volkov Commander and serves as a resource for enthusiasts, researchers, and those interested in early DOS software.
