A Rust-based implementation of the tmux terminal multiplexer.
Project details
ztmux offers a fully functional port of the tmux terminal multiplexer, rewritten in Rust. It's not just a wrapper or control mode; it's a complete reimplementation of tmux, providing robust server-client architecture and verified functionality. Experience the original tmux capabilities enhanced with Rust's performance and safety features.
ztmux is a Rust-based reimplementation of the well-known terminal multiplexer, tmux. Unlike merely wrapping the tmux functionalities or operating on control mode, ztmux provides a complete and fully functional version of tmux, including the server, client, and backend terminal functionalities. This project delivers a true port of tmux in Rust, ensuring that it retains all behaviors of the original while leveraging the safety and efficiency of Rust.
Functionality Parity: Every aspect of the tmux multiplexer is meticulously ported from its C source to Rust, ensuring byte-for-byte accuracy. The project maintains a parity suite that verifies the accuracy of ztmux against the original tmux, achieving a 100% pass rate with 1656 identical gated tests executed successfully.
Unique Extensions: In addition to replicating tmux functionalities, ztmux introduces a range of original subcommands that allow for enhanced user experience. These include live dashboards, process inspectors, and JSON-emitting utilities that add additional insights into the running server.
Customizable and Extensible: ztmux is designed to support a host of plugins and extensions. Users can create a rich set of functionalities through the znative plugin management system, enabling seamless integration with the existing ecosystem of tmux plugins and additional Rust-native plugins.
Efficient Resource Management: The Rust implementation aims for minimal resource usage while maintaining performance suitable for daily developer use, translating to efficient handling of terminal multiplexing tasks.
Secure the Rust toolchain and a terminfo database to get started with ztmux. The installation requires no C libraries, and can be built and run directly using the Rust toolchain. Simply execute the following commands:
cargo build --release
cargo run --release -- new-session
